Arsenal defeat FC Köln in the Champions League

Arsenal started their first match excellently in the Europa League getting on top of the Group H after they defeated the German side, FC Köln on 14th of August.

It was very unpleasant for the Gunners as Cologne mustered their first successful effort just 9 minutes after the beginning of the match from Jhon Cordoba’s shot. However, the host’s morale couldn’t be damaged so easily, as they showed a sturdy defence afterwards, equalising the score from Saed Kolosinac’s shot shortly after the break.

Alexis Sanchez doubled the score for the Gunners in the 67th minute, leaving their opponents behind.

Hector Bellerin finished excellently, as he approached the keeper Timo Horn leaving it at 3-1 after scoring from 3 yards.

The kick-off was postponed for an hour, as 20,000 German visitors started to make a ruckus for not managing to watch the match. Despite the fact, that there were only 2,900 tickets for the visiting fans, the left-out crowd tried to enter to the ground by climbing the barriers and were confronting those who tried to impede them.

After all, Cologne has progressed for the first time into the European Football since 25 years, so some kind of surprise from the fans could be expected.

While Cologne is on the bottom of the Group F, Arsenal got the first position, with BATE Borisov behind who drew previously a 1-1 game with the third-placed Red Star Belgrade.
