Liverpool beats Everton in the FA Cup

Liverpool defeated Everton by a 2-1 score in the third round of the  FA Cup on 5th of January.

Liverpool’s James Milner opened the score in the 35th minute from a penalty after a Mason Holgate’s challenge on Adam Lallana.

Gylfi Sigurdsson equalized the score in the second half with a shot into the edge of the area. It was a brilliant start for former Southampton defender, Virgil van Dijk, who has moved to Reds for £75m. He launched a header in the late game, to give Liverpool the win and ensure they will participate further in the fourth round of the competition.

Van Dijk is an imposing figure, managing to make a debut that many could dream of. Though his main task will lie on the other end of the field, he showed in this match a perfect play on both sides.

Everton remains in little trouble, as they don’t possess a more consistent finishing power. With the move of Cenk Tosun for £27, Toffees’ boss, Sam Allardyce hopes that the player could make the needed difference.

Since the absence of Romelu Lukaku, it became evident that Everton lacks that element that the midfielder provided. In this game, they showed some improvement, and they managed to carry some threat with Ademola Lookman and Yannick Bolasie.

There is more to follow from the new teams’ players, and as Van Dijk managed to make the difference for the Reds, next time it might be Everton’s fortune to finish their encounters with an obvious advantage.
