Real Climbs to Top of La Liga After Defeating Espanyol

Real Madrid climbs to the #1 position in Spanish La Liga after defeating Espanyol on September 22nd. Marco Asensio’s VAR-awarded strike proved enough to beat Espanyol despite Real’s overall shaky defense. Espanyol drops to the sixth position after Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 win over Getafe earlier the same day.

Asensio managed to score a low shot from Luca Modric’s pass just before the break, sealing the score to 1-0 for the remaining of the game. Espanyol appealed for offside, but referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz consulted VAR and after a long delay, awarded the goal. Replays show Asesnio was clearly onside, as the midfielder appeared to joke about waiting with his celebration.

Another opportunity for Real appeared in the latter stages when Isco curved a perfect cross with the outside of his right foot. The ball was intercepted by Lopez, only for him to tip Ramos’s header over the bar.

Espanyol had fairly high chances to score, considering that Real’s offensive was on the shaky side. Even with right-back Odriozola making a great debut, Real were slow to react to a few of Espanyol’s counters which made for excellent scoring opportunities – however, the visitors failed to make use of them. In addition to that, Ramos was caught dallying in possession around his own area – which, had the visitors shown more tenacity, could have cost his team the win and the first position in the Liga.
